What is turbinate hypertrophy?

By Ramtin Kassir, M.D.

Nasal turbinates, also known as nasal conchae, are thin, scroll-like structures located inside the nose. They are made of bone and covered with a thin layer of mucous membrane.

The main function of nasal turbinates is to humidify, warm, and filter the air that we breathe. They are lined with tiny blood vessels that help to moisten and warm the air as it passes through the nose. They also help to filter out dust, dirt, and other particles that may be present in the air we breathe.

Obstruction of the nasal turbinates can cause a range of symptoms, including difficulty breathing through the nose, congestion, and impaired sense of smell. Hypertrophy, or abnormal enlargement, of the turbinates can also cause similar symptoms.

There are several ways to diagnose nasal turbinate obstruction or hypertrophy. A physical examination, during which the doctor will look inside the nose using a lighted instrument called a nasal endoscope, is often the first step. The doctor may also order a CT scan or MRI to get a better view of the turbinates and surrounding structures.

Treatment for nasal turbinate obstruction or hypertrophy may include medications to reduce inflammation and swelling, as well as procedures to reduce the size of the turbinates. One common treatment is turbinate reduction, a surgical procedure in which the turbinates are trimmed or reduced in size. This can help improve breathing and reduce other symptoms caused by the obstruction or hypertrophy.

If you are experiencing symptoms of nasal turbinate obstruction or hypertrophy, it is important to see a triple board certified specialist like Dr. Ramtin Kassir. These specialists have the necessary training and expertise to accurately diagnose and effectively treat this condition.
