What is a Breast Augmentation?

Breasts can be underdeveloped (hypoplastic) or lose volume due to pregnancy or weight loss (hypomania). To correct these issues with breast augmentation surgery, breast implants containing either silicone or saline are placed underneath the breast tissue and chest muscle to increase the size, shape, and projection of the breasts.

Most breasts are uneven to some degree. In patients with more pronounced asymmetry, augmentation is often addressed using two different-sized implants. If the position of the nipple and areola is very different, a lift on one side may be necessary. The goal is to achieve symmetric and natural breasts.

There is no one ideal breast size and shape. Each breast augmentation is as unique as a patient’s anatomy. Some women have smaller chests, and some have wider ones. Some have narrow breasts, and some are wider. Some women have round breasts, while others have more angular breasts. The ideal implant is a combination of your anatomy and the desired look that you want to achieve. A soft, round, and proportional shape that fits your frame will always look beautiful, but the ideal breast size and shape are up to the individual woman.

Steps of Selecting Your Implants

Two types of breast implants are commonly used: saline and silicone. Both have benefits and drawbacks, so it is essential to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon to determine which type is right for you.

Note that the implant will not affect the positioning of the nipple. With the correct placement, the implant will be centered around the breast nipple. If a patient’s areola and nipple complex are more to the side, they will remain that way after an augmentation.

  • Two types of breast implants are commonly used: saline and silicone. Both have benefits and drawbacks, so it is essential to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon to determine which type is right for you.

    • Saline: Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water and are less expensive than silicone implants. They also require a smaller incision for placement. However, saline implants can sometimes give the breasts a less natural look and feel, and can risk leakage if ruptured.
    • Silicone: Silicone implants are filled with a gel that closely resembles human fat. They tend to give the breasts a more natural look and feel and are the preferred implant among most plastic surgeons. Studies have shown that silicone implants pose less risk of capsular contracture.
    • Gummy Bear: Gummy bear implants are a newer type of silicone implant that is becoming increasingly popular. They are also called cohesive silicone gel implants, meaning they retain their shape and do not leak if they rupture. Many women feel that cohesive silicone implants offer the best of both worlds: the natural look and feel of silicone implants with the peace of mind that comes with knowing that they will not leak if ruptured.
  • The best implant size for you will depend on your body type, anatomy, desired look, and the amount of existing breast tissue. Breast implants are measured in cubic centimeters (cc), which is different from a bra size. Two women may look very different with a 300cc implant depending on their body type and weight.

Ideally, the breast implant should also fit the width of the patient’s breast. An implant that is too wide will show on the sides and look unnatural. Breast augmentation patients who desire a more natural look might want less projection than patients who desire a very augmented breast shape. Furthermore, the patient’s skin quality will play a major role. Heavy implants may stretch saggy skin even further.

These factors make it important to consult with an experienced and skilled plastic surgeon. Dr. Franck will measure your anatomical landmarks and characteristics and discuss your ideal volume and implant. This will ensure that you feel safe and confident that you made the right decision.

  • At this time, the majority of breast implants that are used in the USA are round implants. Another popular implant is the “teardrop-shaped implant.” However, these teardrop implants have a textured surface, and textured implants have been associated with a rare disease called Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL). Knowing the safest implant type and shape for you is critical to a successful breast augmentation procedure. Please schedule a consultation to learn more about your risk factors regarding certain implant shapes.

  • The breast implant can be placed in one of two locations: underneath the pectoral muscle (submuscular), directly behind the breast tissue, and over the pectoral muscle (subglandular).

Submuscular placement is often recommended because it offers more support to the implant, which can help decrease the risk of capsular contracture. Additionally, submuscular implants tend to look and feel more natural than subglandular implants. However, this type of placement may require a longer recovery period and cause more discomfort than subglandular placement.

  • There are different ways of placing the incision in breast implant surgery. We prefer the incision along the breast crease. That way, the incision is hidden and, once fully healed, nearly invisible. This approach also has a slightly lower risk of complications.

What Are the Benefits of a Breast Augmentation?

Receiving a breast augmentation can be a highly personal decision. Many women choose to receive a breast augmentation for some of the following benefits:

  • Improved self-confidence
  • Balanced symmetry between the breasts
  • Restoration of breast shape after undergoing cancer or childbirth
  • Enhancing volume due to age-related volume loss or weight loss

Who Is a Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

Ideal candidates for breast augmentation are women who have good shape and want to increase volume and projection. Also, women who have “deflated” breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding, or women who lost volume due to weight loss, are good candidates if the overall shape and nipple position are good. More challenging are breasts that droop downward, with the areola and nipple appearing too low. In this case, a breast lift with or without an implant might be the more appropriate surgery. Some people have one breast that is different from the other. You might have one that is bigger or smaller than the other. Some people have nipples that are in different places. If you have breast asymmetry, breast augmentation can be combined with other procedures to improve symmetry and proportions.

What’s the
First Step?

Selecting the appropriate size, type, and shape of implant for your figure is critical to a successful breast augmentation procedure. To learn more about which implants would suit you, please schedule a consultation with Dr. Franck at either Kassir Plastic Surgery location in New York or New Jersey. Dr. Franck will evaluate your breasts in combination with your medical history to determine which implants would be most appropriate to achieve your aesthetic goals. He will also show you before and after pictures of previous patients so you can better understand which type of implants would suit you best.

If you would like to proceed with a breast augmentation, Dr. Franck will then create a personalized surgical plan to address your breast concerns. With your approval, you may then schedule your breast augmentation procedure with a member of our patient care team.

What to Expect on the Day of Breast Augmentation Surgery

Before your breast augmentation surgery, Dr. Franck will meet with you to review your agreed-upon surgical plan and mark the areas on your breasts for incisions. An anesthesiologist will administer anesthesia to ensure you are comfortable and pain-free for the duration of the procedure. Once you are sedated, Dr. Franck will create the incisions and insert the chosen implants until your breasts have achieved the desired appearance.

After the surgery, you may return home in a compression garment to prevent disruption to the breasts. After sufficient rest and recovery, you will be able to resume most routine activities.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

The procedure is performed in our New York City or New Jersey surgical centers. Breast augmentation surgery is ambulatory, which means you can go home the same day. Recovery times vary from patient to patient but are short.

Most people feel well enough to return to work and their normal activity levels within a few days. Some discomfort might occur for the first few days, which can be alleviated with medication. You will need to sleep on your back for at least one week and not lift anything heavier than 10 pounds during that time. You should also avoid any strenuous activity or exercise for four to six weeks.

You will have a follow-up appointment within one week of your surgery so Dr. Franck can check on your progress and ensure you are healing correctly. Please keep all follow-up appointments so we can monitor your progress and address any concerns you might have.
